UV protection for Kids

I just read this article as I was browsing the web that I wanted to share with others. Please view http://www.nj.com/news/gloucester/local/index.ssf?/base/news-10/121540572624740.xml&coll=8.

The article talks about how our children always need UV protection when they are outdoors in the sun. I took note since we have been going to the beach during this summer, as our daughter loves the water. Its a little scary how most of the time we don't think of these things, taking a lot of things for granted.

I thought this article would be useful for everyone with kids.

My children are 6 and 4 years old respectively. We have not paid attention to this yet. And they spend quite a lot a summer time outdoors with little protection.

What are the indications of a potential problem? Would we need to see an ophthalmologist to assess the same?

Thank you very much for the article link.

Pointblank,

You are very welcome.

Although the article hasnt mentioned anything with regard to your questions which I think every parent in this situation would ask, it would not hurt us when we are at the pediatrician's office to ask him or her.

What we can do immediately is start protecting them the next time they go out.

I shall definitely post anything I find out.

I will check on this too when I meet the ophthalmologist. I am due to see one very soon for the children.

Sriram, I found a very useful article on UV protection, on the website of American Optometric Association. Please read: http://www.aoa.org/uv-protection.xml

The article describes the types of UV radiations, how to assess risk of damage to eyes from UV radiation, and what kind of protection you can use.
